1. What is your role at UCR?
I'm chief tea drinker and part-time route setter.

2. How did you get into climbing?
My mother told me to - she didn't approve of the usual, 'common' sports activities.

3. What is your most memorable climbing experience?
Climbing with Sarah Reynolds.

4. What is your favourite meal?
Curry will do it.

5. Who is your climbing hero?
The aforementioned Sarah Reynolds.

6. What are your climbing ambitions?
They have been achieved!

7. What would be your theme tune?
"Hello, Hello, I'm Back Again" by Gary Glitter

We had dipped under the radar for a mo but UCR's Profile team are back with a profile on Mr Guy 'lastminute.com' Jarvis.

1. What is your role in UCR?
They call me the 'Chief Instructor'.

2. How did you get into climbing?
I joined the Manchester University Mountaineering Club and they had the wildest nights out - we were banned from more North Wales mountaineering club huts than any other university mountaineering club.

3. What has been your most memorable climbing experience?
Climbing in Wadi Rum in Jordan. The routes are big, loose and scary. They are about a kilometre long, hugely adventurous and in the middle of nowhere.

4. What is your favourite food?
Leftovers!

5. Who are your climbing heroes?
I only have one and it is Mick Fowler. Over the past few years he has held down a full time job and at the same time he has 'whipped the pants' of prima donna climbing professionals.

6. What are your ambitions?
I would like to retire at some stage, buy a yacht and sail off into the sunset without 2 broken ankles as a legacy of climbing.

7. What is your theme tune?
'How Soon Is Now' by the Smiths.

Ah ha - now it is the turn of our very own Ben West, the one and only!

1. What is your role at UCR?
I'm the Centre Manager, Chief Route Setter and ' I will do whatever.'

2. How did you get into climbing?
It was on a school trip with my 'old' science teacher, Guy Jarvis. By-the-way, he didn't teach me much science.

3. What is your most memorable climbing experience?
There are quite a few - most of them involving Steve Findlay. The highlight, if you can call it that, was being caught up in the tsunami in Thailand. As a party of 6 we were climbing at the Ao Nang Tower. Steve and I had climbed the route, signed the book and lowered off. Whilst the others were climbing, Steve and I were deep water soloing around the tower when we noticed the tide rushing out. We got back into the boat and then noticed the wave - OMG! We took the boat around the back of the tower for shelter but then the 2nd wave capsized us. Steve became entangled in the anchor rope but managed to free himself. We swam through the waves to the capsized boat and eventually were washed up on shore. Our friends on the tower were rescued 4 hours later by a police boat but we didn't find out that the girl friends were safe until 10 hours later. It was epic!

4. What is your favourite meal?
It has to be roast lamb dinner.

5. Who are your climbing heroes?
I have three. Firstly, there is Martin Crocker. He has done so much in terms of hard trad and sport climbing around the country. Secondly, there is Malcolm Smith. He is a dark horse - super strong but shys away from publicity. Thirdly, there is Ian Vickers who is an unbelievably talented climber with a style all of his own.

6. What are your climbing ambitions?
I want to climb as much as I can and as hard as I can all over the world. Ideally, I would do 8c before the kids arrive!

7. What would be your theme tune?
It has to be 'Eye of the Tiger' by Survivor.

Profile - McKenzie Lloyd-Smith

It is the return of the UCR profiling machine and it is the turn of our youngest member of staff, McKenzie, to reveal all.

1. What is your role at UCR?
I hold the role of the youngest employee - I represent the Youth at UCR.

2. How did you get into climbing?
It was through school, QEH, I was injured and couldn't play rugby so I came along to the climbing sessions instead.

3. What is your most memorable climbing experience?
I spent the day trad climbing with Tom Heslam at Gull Bay in Devon. It was an eye-opener to what is possible.

4. What is your favourite meal?
Continuing in the trad line it is good old-fashioned fish 'n' chips especially with minted peas.

5. Who is your climbing hero?
I have 2 - it is Le Cox and Mr West, especially for their natural ability and being able to do what it is they do without seemingly doing any training.

6. What are your climbing ambitions?
It would be to climb abroad and to be able to climb consistently at 7a.

7. What would be your theme tune?
It is Rappers Delight by the Sugarhill Gang.

No problems climbing walls for disabled students

A GROUP of disabled students from a Bristol school went up the wall, here at Underocver Rock. The trip was arranged to encourage the students not to let their disabilities get in the way of leading an active life and to help them believe that with support they can do everything able-bodied people can do.

The students – five of whom are in wheelchairs and have disabilities including muscular dystrophy, spina bifida and cerebral palsy – each needed the help of two instructors but were determined not to let their disabilities stop them from tackling the 20ft walls.

Academy learning support assistant Nina Matthews, who helped organise the trip with colleagues Rosie Hart and Rachel Gregor, said: "This is the second trip we've organised to the centre. The first, in March, was such a success we decided to do it again. One child said he wasn't even going to take part because it seemed so daunting but he decided to have a go, and the look on his face when he made it to the top of the wall and back was a pleasure to see.

"The main reason for the trip is to broaden the horizons of the students to show they can do anything with a little help."
Student Danielle Lawrence, 14, said: "At first I was frightened but it turned out to be good fun. It really helped me feel more confident."

In the last hours before Cheddar eases up for the Summer 2 of our erstwhile staff set out their stalls.

Ben gets Serious
Our Centre Manager decided to go out with a blast. He warmed up on the classic Still Waters 7b, moved onto Metal Detector 7c+, which he dispatched on his first redpoint before turning his attention to The Wrecking Crew 8a+. He sent this also on his first redpoint before warming down on Hellbent 7c. Not bad for an afternoons work!

Tom moves up the grades
Just as impressive, Tom Heslam, on the day before completed his first ever 8a with Fornicator Simulator - he did this on his first redpoint.

Well done to you both - were these guys not supposed to be working?

Hello Everybody,

This Friday, we are supporting Wallace & Gromit's Grand Appeal in raising funds for the Bristol Children's Hospital.

All you have to do as members is pick up a sponsorship form and ask, cajole or demand that family, friends & colleagues sponsor you to the grand tune of £100. Then turn up on Friday and climb for 2 hours - can you climb 10 routes in that time period? We need 40 people to do this in 2 hours to complete 4000m of climbing!

Jo McCready (co-organiser with Lauren Vincent) will then sign off your form to say you have duly done your bet.

New Loos coming!

From Thursday 1st July, the Centre will face some disruption as we are having our loos refurbished. The work should be finished by 1st August.

There will be a couple of temporary loos situated just outside the side of the building for the use of our customers. We trust this won't cause too much inconvienence and the result will be well worth the trouble.

Now it is the turn of Sarah-Jane our latest Duty Manager to share her thoughts with us. For those who are interested Sarah-Jane is sitting at the top of 'Nutcracker' in Yosemite.

1. What is your role at UCR?
I'm one of the four Duty Managers responsible for stopping people killing themselves on my shift.

2. How did you get into climbing?
It was via a boyfriend - so it was a real girl thing! Initially, I was scared of heights which I have conquered.

3. What is your most memorable climbing experience?
Its a route called 'Underneath the Arches' at Pembroke.It is an all day traverse that is a real journey. Not only is it bird-banned for long periods but access is difficult and escape all but impossible. We did this in February with low sun all day - it was a proper adventure.

4. What is your favourite meal?
My mum's roast dinners - mainly because I don't have to do any cooking!

5. Who are your climbing heroes?
I don't really read the magazines but it is probably Lynn Hill mainly for her bravery. By the way, Claire Durant, you still have my copy of Lynn Hill's autobiography - where is it?

6. What are your climbing ambitions?
Just to get climbing again.

7. What would be your theme tune?
Animal Collective - "My Girls"

Bristol is set for a taste of the Deep South this summer with the UK’s first full-blown US-style barbecue competition and food show sponsored by Weber UK.

Grillstock 2010 is a barbecue themed two-day food and drink festival taking place at Bristol’s waterfront on Saturday 17th and Sunday 18th July. The event will see up to 150 of the UK’s top barbecue chefs battling it out for the title of ‘King of the Grill’ in the two-day competition with an anticipated 10,000 visitors who will all have the opportunity to taste and vote for their favourite BBQ food.

Up to thirty teams will compete for the coveted ‘King Of The Grill’ trophy sponsored by Napoleon Grills over the course of the weekend with individual trophies for five key categories: Best Chicken; Best Ribs; Best Pork Shoulder and Best BBQ Sauce; and the Best dish made from a selection of ‘mystery box’ ingredients. Bristol-based chef Mitch Tonks will lead the professional team of judges sampling every dish. The overall winner will be the team who gain the highest score in all categories and they will go on to represent the UK at the World Championship Barbecue Competition at the Memphis in May International Festival.

The Grand Appeal Presents The Cracking Climbathon

On Friday 2nd July 2010, Undercover Rock are proudly hosting the 'Cracking Climbathon' for The Grand Appeal. Come and take on our climbing challenge to help raise funds for our Cots for Tots Appeal to support the Special Care Baby Unit at St Michael's Hosiptal in Bristol.

For those of you that have not heard of Wallace & Gromit's Grand Appeal before they are the only charity fundraising exclusively for the Bristol Children’s Hospital and St Michael’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (Special Care Baby Unit).

The Grand Appeal fundraises to provide comforts and facilities for patients and their families whilst in hospital. Bristol Children’s Hospital and the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit provide world-class care to babies and children from Bristol, the South West of England and in some cases the whole of the UK and overseas.

The Grand Appeal are asking you to help them fundraise £4,000 by taking part in a climbathon. Grand Appeal are challenging you to come and help them by climbing 4K and raising over 4K, all in 4 hours! The challenge is to climb over 75 metres and raise £100 each. From complete beginners who have never climbed before to climbing experts, this event is for everyone! You do not need to be an athlete or an expert climber to take part - all that's required is a sense of fun and determination!

This week it is the turn of Mr Environment himself, namely Lloyd Newman.

1. What is your role at UCR?
I am the Cafe Manager and Social Facilitator!

2. How did you get into climbing?
I started when I was 14 at Llangorse at a friend's birthday party. But really it was in 2005 while at UWE that a lovely girl called Liz introduced me to climbing.

3. What is your most memorable climbing experience?
Completing the Cul de Chien roof at Font and watching Jo Mac fall of a 6c at Torbryan before making the first clip!

4. What is your favourite meal?
Crispy aromatic duck.

5. Who is your climbing hero?
Prajak Khunrat - the 'Bruce Lee' of climbing - not only because of his own ability but due to his positive attitude towards the climbing of others regardless of grade.

6. What are your climbing ambitions?
To carry on climbing until old age stops me.

7. What would be your theme tune?
'Mi swing es tropical' by Quantic and Nickodemus.

National Wildlife Day

Noah’s Ark Zoo Farm in Bristol, will once again host National Wildlife Day on Saturday 22nd May.

The day is aimed at getting visitors to take an active part in conservation projects and learn about what they can do to help the environment. To celebrate there will be lots of fun interactive activities such as pond dipping, a conservation talk and meet and greet the animals.

Visitors should bring their wellies and wet weather clothes as it may be a mucky experience. National Wildlife Day aims to bring back the lost traditions and knowledge of Britain’s natural heritage in a fun and enthralling, active day out!

Stokes Croft Streetfest

Under the name of the Stokes Croft Streetfest, a day of free activities, workshops, stalls, food and live music will take place on Saturday 22nd of May.

The daytime event will be centered around Kings’ Square off Jamaica Street from midday until 6pm and is free to enter. This will include outdoor stages, stalls, booths, flea markets, free shops, games, workshops, art galleries and live music, with stages in Kings Square park, The Bear Pit (St James Barton Roundabout Underpass), The Junction Garden and the Full Moon yard. Artists include Kid Carpet, Miss Cecily, We are the Nynes, Phil King, Lamp Fall and Terry Clement plus loads more.

If that’s not enough, in the evening until late the best of local music will be featured at every venue along Stokes Croft; Lakota, Blue Mountain, The Attic, The Junction, Canteen, The Croft and Left Bank. There’s something for everyone with live bands Yes Rebels, John E Vistic, Gecko, Fromage En Feu, Circus of Invention, William Mbuende Band, Ironing Board, Dr Meaker, Substatic, Kundama and dance music from nearly every club night in Bristol at Unity in Lakota and Blue Mountain.

The PRSC and CoExist have joined the Bristol Festival Community Group to organise the festival, in order to raise funds towards the regeneration of the area, volunteer training and September’s city centre community festival, Brisfest.

1. What is your role at UCR?
I am the finest DM and Buildings Manager UCR has seen and a friend to everyone.

2. How did you get into climbing?
Through friends when I was 13 years of age - I did a junior Beginners Course at 'The Climb' in Amersham.

3. What is your most memorable climbing experience?
Climbing in Thailand - not only was the climbing beautiful but the stunning environment made it even more special especially when you can drop off into the sea after a route.

4. What is your favourite meal?
It just has to be a big, greasy fry-up complete with black pudding, soda bread and potato bread.

5. Who is your climbing hero?
I have three of them. Johnny Dawes, Reinhold Messner and especially Dave McLeod, All of them have pushed the limits in terms of climbing and mountaineering.

6. What are you climbing ambitions?
To see the world through climbing and enjoy every minute of it.

7. What is your 'theme tune'?
After long deliberation it has to be 'Hi life' by Luke Howard.

What is your role at UCR?
I am a tea and flapjack operative.

How did you get into climbing?
I got the job through a friend - it was a spur of the moment idea and here we are 7 years later and still loving being around the climbing scene.

What is your most memorable climbing experience?
I don't really have one - i just enjoy climbing generally and it is great fun.

What is your favourite meal?
I love roast dinner with lots and lots and lots of gravy, swiftly followed by lemon meringue pie.

Who are you climbing heroes?
They are the local Bristol boys namely, Ben West, Matt Cox and Adam Muholland

What are your climbing ambitions?
Just to keep having fun, be able to climb and have a giggle at the same time.

What is your theme tune?
'Eye of the Tiger' by Survivor

What is your role at UCR?

I am a senior instructor and I am the glue that binds the centre together!

How did you get into climbing?

I was involved in an outdoor climbing course at college 8 years ago and climbing was part of the course. From my youth there has always been an interest in the outdoors as my dad would take me on big walks.

What is your most memorable climb?

Completing the Old Man of Hoy is by far the most memorable experience. I think it was the fact that it was a massive adventure and so far from home that made it so special.

What is your favourite meal?

It has to be Sunday roast dinner with all the trimmings.

Who is your climbing hero and why?

It has to be Joe Brown and Pat Littlejohn. Not only are they both awesome in terms of new climbs but they took climbing to a new level.

Do you have any climbing ambitions?

Yes - I want to keep climbing until I fall off the perch!

What is your theme tune?

My tune would be Neil Diamond's 'Iam ... I said' - it reminds me of car journeys with my familygoing on holiday.

Lakeland 100

What is the Lakeland 100 & Lakeland 50?

The Lakeland 100 (UTLD) takes place on the weekend of July 23rd - 25th and is the most spectacular long distance trail race which has ever taken place within the UK.

The circular route encompasses the whole of the lakeland fells, includes in the region of 6300m of ascent and consists entirely of public bridleways and footpaths. The lakeland route starts in Coniston in Cumbria and heads South before completing a clockwise loop which takes in the Dunnerdale fells, Eskdale, Wasdale and Buttermere before arriving in Keswick. From here, the route heads to Matterdale and continues over to Haweswater before returning via Kentmere, Ambleside and Elterwater to the finish at Coniston. In addition to the Lakeland 100, the Lakeland 50 event also takes place with 3100m of ascent, starting from Dalemain Estate north of Pooley Bridge and finishing at Coniston.

If the thought of it scares you, whilst it is still a tough event with a 24-hour cut-off and 2,900 metres of climbing over the 50-mile route, but it's well within the capabilities of normal runners and fit walkers.

Watch this space as we may have some places in the 50-mile event to give away.

One big plus of tackling an event like this is that there's support all round the route with manned checkpoints complete with hot food, drink and electronic timing to track competitors' progress. The route itself starts and finishes in Coniston and is a circular affair using footpaths, trails and open fellside.

Volcanic Ash And The Outdoors

The news and weather forecasts are full of volcanic ash this weekend, with the plume of particles from the Icelandic volcanic eruption having grounded planes in the UK, but beside the difficulty in reaching foreign hills, are there any implications for walkers and climbers?
The good news is that for most outdoors people, the consensus seems to be that any impact should be minimal, even with the very fine particles reaching ground level, first in Scotland and then moving south.

The Health Protection Agency has said that the ash shouldn't pose any serious health risk, but could cause irritation particularly to those with respiratory conditions like asthma, emphysema and chronic bronchitis and advises those at risk to carry inhalers and medication with them and those who notice symptoms should either return home or limit their activities.

The HPA said: "It is important to stress that the concentration of particles which may reach ground level is likely to be low and should not cause serious harm. If people are outside this evening and notice symptoms such as itchy or irritated eyes, runny nose, sore throat or dry cough, or if they notice a dusty haze in the air or can smell sulphur, rotten eggs, or a strong acidic smell, they may wish to limit their activities outdoors or return indoors.

"Those with existing respiratory conditions such as chronic bronchitis, emphysema and asthma may notice these effects more than others and should ensure they have any inhalers or other medications with them.

"Any such health effects are likely to be short term. The Health Protection Agency, Health Protection Scotland and the Met Office will continue to monitor the situation and issue any further advice or updates as necessary as the weather changes."
More positively, the ash particles are predicted to create 'spectacular sunsets' across Britain and judging by last night's Peak District efforts, it's worth staying out on the hill just to gawp at the vibrant colours as the sun's rays reflect off the particles of ash and sulphur. Volcanic wild camp anyone?

Emmett and MacLeod on the BBC

Dave MacLeod and Tim Emmett are set to be filmed for a major TV show this summer. The programme, made for BBC Scotland, will feature the two climbers new routing on the Scottish Islands. The main event will be an attempt on a new route up the hugely overhanging crag of Sron Ulladale on Harris.

"It has been developed by Triple Echo Productions for BBC Scotland and will consist of a 6 hour broadcast, scheduled for Saturday 28th August." said Richard Else, of Triple Echo Productions.
Despite the media hype and over use of catch phrases such as 'world record' and 'extreme climbing', the programme looks set to be a great hit, appealing to both climbers and the non climbing public.

In the build up to the Sron Ulladale climb, Emmett and MacLeod will be new routing on the islands:

"A few months before the live broadcast, Tim and Dave will be attempting another world record - to put up 5 hard new climbs on 5 different islands in 5 days. With weather, tides and sea sickness to contend with, even the logistics of this attempt are mind boggling. Add to that the hardest routes the pair can find on each island and with the clock relentlessly ticking, it's likely to be a nerve-racking week for both climbers and film crew." commented Richard Else, deftly slipping the phrase 'world record' in the first sentence.

Dave MacLeod has already been out on Harris "peering at unclimbed cliffs for hours from the boat" in preparation for his and Emmett's five day new route marathon, but Richard Else was keen to promote other aspects of this television programme, that will cover culture as well as climbing:

"There's more to this broadcast, however, than these dramatic ascents. No one who visits the Outer Hebrides can fail to be impressed by their cultural, linguistic and historical importance. Add to that some of the most stunning scenery in Europe and a wealth of outstanding natural history, and it is easy to appreciate why this broadcast will celebrate these elements as well. Interspersed with the climbing action, will be a number of features highlighting the special character of the Hebrides. And in further recognition of the quality of the landscape, Britain's best known walker, Cameron McNeish will be creating a new long distance route through these islands."

Bristol tops list of bike-friendly cities

Bristol is the UK's most bike-friendly big city, while London is one of the least hospitable to cyclists, according to a survey.

The study by Cycling Plus magazine took the country's 20 biggest cities and towns by population – thus excluding traditional bike centres such as Cambridge and York – and ranked them using a series of factors including cycle commuter numbers, levels of bike theft, the number of traffic-free bike lanes, casualties, pollution and even rainfall.
Bristol edged out Nottingham and Leicester, while London was rated 17th, above only Glasgow, Birmingham and bottom-placed Bradford.

The accolade for Bristol comes two years after it was named the country's first "cycling city" by the Department for Transport, giving it access to around £20m in extra funding for bike-related schemes. The city is also the birthplace of Sustrans, the green cycle route charity which began 30 years ago when volunteers converted an old rail line between Bristol and Bath into a dedicated bike route.

Bristol was "leading the way after significant government investment", said the editor of Cycling Plus, Rob Spedding. He added: "Local cyclists still feel that progress isn't being made quickly enough, but the UK holds up Bristol as a shining example when it comes to the number of riders, bike shops, traffic free routes and low pollution levels."

Jeff Fry, a member of the Bristol South Cycling Club for half a century and still a keen rider aged 70 despite a recent hip operation, said he was "a little surprised" at his home city's new accolade.
"There's some good parts to cycling here, but I don't see how we're much better than most places. Cars do tend to cut you up. I don't like to complain too much about motorists as I'm one myself, but it can be dangerous."

The investment had brought new infrastructure such as a dedicated bike path attached to Bristol's outer ringroad, but progress overall remained "patchy", he said.
"On a main road near where I live they've just put up some shiny new signs indicating a bike lane, but I can't see any signs of the lane yet," he said. "I don't know if it's ever going to happen."
On one cycling internet forum some were more blunt. "Bristol? They must not have stayed overnight or they wouldn't have had a bike come morning," one reader noted.

While the government and local councils have invested millions in cycling infrastructure in recent years, bike campaign groups complain that the results tend to be mixed and that the UK remains decades behind countries such as the Netherlands and Denmark.
As another cycling forum commenter argued: "Deciding which UK city is best for cycling is a bit like deciding which one of Jedward is the more talented."

New Youngest British Female Attempts Everest

A British girl of 22 will attempt to break the world record of being the youngest climber of Mount Everest when she scales the mountain in May to raise money for Global Angels Children’s Charity. Bonita Norris will auction off three flags to help raise money for her trek; the flags will contain a personal message from each of the winning bidders which Norris will then take with her on her climb.

Norris, who had never climbed before she decided on this goal said, “There are many moments of self doubt, but it’s important to put that worry into training and on focussing on the task ahead. I have a big responsibility to take three lucky winners flags to the top of the world, and I wouldn't take on the job if I didn't think I could fulfil someone's dream of having their personal message flown from Everest.” “As everything has happened so last minute in finding my sponsor, mobile phone top-up at ATM, preparations are pretty full on! Suddenly from thinking I wasn't going at all, I am now trying to source new kit, stay healthy and preparing the million and one things that need to be in order for a person to go off and climb Everest!”

If she makes it, Bonita will take the record from Welsh climber Tori James, 25, who commented, “I don't mind at all about the record, it's more for the memories that I climbed Everest. I've still got the First Welsh Woman record though, and that will always be the case! I hope Bonita summits because she has worked really hard for it."

Bristol 10k Road Race
The Bristol 10k is set to take place on Sunday 9th May 2010.
The race route will be similar to the Bristol Half Marathon course, along car-free roads, starting from At Bristol, following the harbourside then along the Avon Gorge and Cumberland Road returning to At Bristol via Prince Street Bridge and will be a great opportunity for runners to experience a short version of the half marathon course.
Race details, advice, training schedules and regular updates will be available on the race website.
Official race charities for the first Bristol 10km run will be St Peters Hospice and COCO.

JUNE
Bristol Festival of Nature
Taking place at Bristol Harbourside, an ambitious and imaginative weekend of films, animal encounters, exhibitions, walks, talks, workshops and competitions for all ages and interests. It is the UK's biggest celebration of the natural world.
This is a free event.

Rat Race Urban Adventure
Rat Racing returns to the streets of ‘ole Brizzle. We’ve abseiled off car parks, jumped off bridges, surfed our way down kayak weirs and even indulged in a spot of street art. And that was just 2009! The Bristol Urban Adventure Challenge is sometimes thought of as one of our “greenest,” with countryside that almost reaches into the city centre via Ashton Court country park, the world-famous Avon Gorge and lush green countryside all around. The cityscape is fascinating with a great mix of old and new and we just love the laid-back atmosphere that oozes out of this town. Welcome to Bristol Rat Race 2010.
